The Color Room Celebrates Nine Years in Wentzville
Thank you for all the love!
This March, The Color Room celebrates nine years as the leading hair and skincare salon in Wentzville, MO.
What a ride it has been!
In 2013, The Color Room owner, Toni Peanick, was reeling from a toxic work environment at another salon where she and her fellow stylists were overworked, underpaid, and undervalued, decided it was time to disrupt the industry.
“In 2013 . . . our industry was horrible at providing healthy work environments,” Peanick says. “The pay was even worse. I can remember working 10 days and receiving a paycheck for $400. There had to be a better way, so Jim [my husband] and I opened The Color Room.”
Over the last nine years, The Color Room has grown from two employees and dream to a seven-figure company that employs 30 people and has gone through two expansions, with a third underway. All this despite, a global pandemic that no one could’ve predicted.
“2020 was a lot of things, but it was not failure,” Peanick stresses. Although the pandemic required The Color Room to pivot, it didn’t keep us down for long. In 2020, we received coveted recognition as one of the Top 100 L’Oréal Professional Salons in the US, an honor that recognizes salons' outstanding quality, superior consistency, and unparalleled service.
Don’t mistake this success for luck and good timing. Growth like this doesn’t happen without a lot of hard work and sacrifice.
“Year one, I worked open to close . . . Tuesday through Saturday, mostly alone,” Peanick reminisces. “I did not collect a check or tips during the first year.”
But she wouldn’t change a thing.
For Peanick, all the sacrifices were worth it for the opportunity to provide stylists a nurturing and supportive environment to perfect their craft and deliver exceptional customer experiences.
The Color Room recruits talent from local beauty schools, offering an extensive paid master program to help kickstart stylists' and estheticians’ careers. The master program pays its talent a living wage, including tips, and provides hands-on education on industry-leading techniques to deliver the superior guest experiences The Color Room is known for. The program allows new talent to build their client list and launch a profitable career as an in-demand stylist.
“Education in a constantly evolving industry is vital to our success as a salon and spa company,” Peanick explains. “As a company, 10% of our profits from all services and retail always go back into educating future and current teammates.” A portion of beauty product sales also goes back into providing wellness benefits for our team.
Over the last nine years, The Color Room’s unsurpassed customer service has been the core of the company’s success. The guest experience must always take precedence. When guests walk into The Color Room, they step into a welcoming, upbeat, and fun environment. Although the ambiance is upscale and modern, there’s something for everyone. From hair treatments like blonding to skin services such as microneedling and HydraFacial, there are price points for everyone’s budget. We welcome everyone at The Color Room because everyone deserves the best skin and hair of their life!
During the last year, The Color Room has expanded its services. It now offers 100% Remy hair extensions and has hired five nurses to provide guests with innovative medical skin care therapies such as injectables, IV therapy, and B12 therapy.
The Color Room Gives Back
We own much of our continued success to the community, which is why we make it our mission to give back.
“We love supporting local organizations,” Peanick says.
In 2021, The Color Room raised $4,000 in honor of Lance Cpl. Jared Schmitz, a Wentzville native killed in the suicide bomber attack that happened during an evacuation mission in Afghanistan in August 2021. The money benefited the Hero Network, a non-profit supporting local first responders and military families by promoting their businesses. The Color Room has also raised $5,000 for The Child Advocacy Center that helps abused children get to safety, $2,000 for Bree’s Gift, benefitting adoption, $1,000 for The BackStoppers Foundation, and over $3,000 more in services for local not-for-profits through various fundraising events.
Reflecting on the past nine years, Peanick is struck with overwhelming gratitude for the community that took a chance on her small business when she first opened her doors on March 28th, 2013.
“I have watched celebrity stylists gain fame through social [media], and I think that’s cool. But what I really think is cool, is impacting the community and people around you. It’s better than being instafamous or [going] viral. It’s really about what we do every day, consistently and methodically, that delivers true success. Partner with people who care. People who are passionate.”
As The Color Room inches closer to a decade in business, the future gets bigger. In addition to the third expansion to the current location, plans for a second location are in the works [spoiler alert].
“I dreamt about a successful salon and spa company 20 years ago in Mr. Sipple's math class. I actually decided in his class that I would own a salon because I wouldn’t have to do math. Boy was I wrong,” Peanick laughs, reminding anyone who cares to listen to follow their dreams and do their homework!
